Construction and installation methods complement each other at Omnium Scalda

Plug-and-play installation starts at the drawing board
From the 2027–2028 academic year, Scalda's Groen College will move to a new location at Omnium in Goes. A modern, future-proof learning environment is taking shape on the site of the former tropical forest, in the heart of the Hollandsche Hoeve area. For the electrical installations, Croonwolter&dros's Heinkenszand branch opted for a plug-and-play approach using Isolectra's Wieland GST18® system. The repetitive nature of the work and the use of metal stud partition walls make this project particularly well suited to this installation method.
The new school building is being constructed by Bouwbedrijf Vaessen, based in Raamsdonksveer. Commissioned by the main contractor, Croonwolter&dros Heinkenszand is responsible for all electrical, mechanical and plumbing installations.
“The project is currently in the finishing stage,” explains Leonard Brouwer, project manager at Croonwolter&dros Heinkenszand. “The new school building is scheduled for completion at the end of December or the beginning of January.”

Efficient installation in metal stud walls
The school building features metal stud partition walls, providing a natural starting point for plug-and-play installation.
“We were looking for a fast and efficient way to install both the lighting and power systems,” says Brouwer. “This type of construction is ideally suited to that approach. There is sufficient space within the metal stud walls to neatly accommodate cavity wall boxes, socket outlets and plug-in connection leads. You can also work considerably faster, provided you follow the plug-and-play layout correctly.”
For Croonwolter&dros Heinkenszand, the project was its first experience of plug-and-play installation on this scale. Isolectra not only supplied the materials but also supported the team throughout the preparation and installation phases.
“Plug-and-play installation is straightforward, but it still requires thorough preparation and a good understanding of the system,” emphasises Jeroen Eikelenboom, account manager at Isolectra. “There are specific technical and organisational requirements that need to be met. That is why we reviewed the process together in advance, including the materials required and how they would be used on the project.”
Isolectra remained involved during the installation phase as well.
“We provided comprehensive training, covering topics such as how to lock the connectors correctly. We also visited the project several times to monitor progress and answer any questions. However, the team had already gained a very good understanding of plug-and-play installation.”

Joint preparation, streamlined execution
The collaboration began during the pre-construction planning phase. Rather than following the usual approach of ordering standard Wieland GST18® connection leads through an electrical wholesaler, the plug-and-play concept for Omnium was developed jointly.
“The prefabricated mounting boxes with socket outlets were engineered together in advance,” explains Brouwer. “We reviewed the installation drawings, coordinated the schedule and determined which materials were required for each application and location.”
This preparation translated into a streamlined installation process.
“We started by installing the cable trays on the empty floors. Next, we installed the cable distribution boxes and put up the partition walls. We could then fit the mounting boxes and socket outlets and install the connection leads. This allowed us to build up the installation step by step, floor by floor.”
The prefabrication work delivered particularly significant time savings.
“All socket outlets were fitted with Wieland connection leads in advance, allowing them to be connected quickly on site,” explains Eikelenboom. “We also prepared the switching accessories and cavity wall boxes beforehand. Croonwolter&dros supplied us with all the required materials, which we assembled into complete socket outlet units. These were then delivered to the project on a just-in-time basis, organised by room.”
More than 1,800 connection leads
The quantities involved highlight the scale of the project. Isolectra supplied approximately 500 prefabricated socket outlet units, 800 Wieland connection leads for the power installation and 1,000 leads for the lighting installation, supplemented by several hundred distribution units and T-splitters.
“Both the lighting and power installations use the Wieland GST18® system,” says Eikelenboom. “It is a standardised system that enables repetitive building installations to be assembled efficiently. It is particularly effective in a project like this, where many applications are identical.”
For Brouwer, the main added value lies in the collaboration.
“I had not previously worked directly with Isolectra, as we normally purchase our plug-in connection leads through the wholesaler without project-specific support. On this project, Isolectra has clearly taken on the role of a technical knowledge partner.
“Because Jeroen and his colleagues were involved from the engineering stage through to installation, helping us identify the best plug-and-play solutions and processes, we can deliver this large-scale project quickly, efficiently and sustainably.”
